fell in love with this old workhorse

Unread postby ShaveDaWookie » Mon Jan 16, 2017 11:09 pm

was poking through small town pawn shops when i came on this old girl. Action was smooth, trigger felt great, and after some inspection bore looks hardly touched. I usually stay away from sporterized antiques, but i kinda like her.

the sights are pretty bubba'd, and i expect wont shoot well. Would like thoughts on options for replacement.

Had a few questions, anyone recognize those proof marks? Or perhaps they are import export stamps of some kind.

Anyone have a source for e-bloc mags? im having trouble finding anyone selling any. also looking for a source of american .318 ammo, which ive heard is safe to shoot for all gew 88s, but im not finding anything but surplus ammo.

Commercial U.S. made ammo is safe to shoot Remington/Winchester/Federal etc also there is reproductions made to original ammo specs at ows-ammo.com search mauser 88. on the en-bloc clips the ones from numrich are repops so will need to tweak them a little to work, those are German inspection marks, your rifle is the second year of production. What kind of barrel is on your rifle?

Thanks for the intel fellas, my friends and I are history nerds so we're excited to get her shooting again. No two parts that are serialized are matching so who knows where she has been, as for the barrel it seems hardly used, i haven't had a chance to get her slugged yet but i will asap. As well as a range report.

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a original stock, or trading plus cash for my sporter stock. Anyone have any thoughts beyond some high contrast paint for the sights?

ive included a few more pictures of the serialized parts since they have a proof mark on them. not sure if this will provide any info but im still new to the gew 88. Couldn't get a picture of the bore but it looks damned near new.

Yes that is the right ammo made like the originals. I can not tell from your pictures if you have the original barrel shroud with front sight soldered on or if you have a replacement barrel with sigh on it also does your bolt have a bolt head on it? Without one you can accidently discharge a round while chambering it, I have a Gew88 stock with bands shoot me a P.M. if interested
