Japanese Capture Gew 88

I recently ran across a rather interesting piece of military history: a German-made Gew 88 which ended up converted to a Japanese training rifle. From what I've seen these aren't exactly uncommon, but nobody seems to have much information on them. The one I have seems particularly curious as it retains the rear part of the barrel shroud for the rear sight, but the rest has been cut off and replaced with a handguard and new front sight. In addition, a floorplate has been welded onto the receiver, and the rifle restocked with no cut for a magazine. It retains no markings except for the serial number and the number "212" on the bottom of the receiver. I've read Scarlata's book, but he makes no mention of this variant. I'm not quite sure what bayonet this would take, either- Arisaka possibly? So what can you all tell me?
Also, sorry about the poor picture quality.
